Professional Development

We train and educate child care providers by offering a variety of opportunities that include module series, technical assistance and coaching. We also offer free resources through our Traveling Resource and Information Library Services (TRAILS).

Requirements:

  • Proof of completion of all required coursework

  • Professional Portfolio

  • Minimum of one year of employment in licensed or regulated child care within the last 5 years

WV Child Care Credential

The first  few years of a child's life set the foundation for future success. As a caregiver and life-long learner, you have the task of providing quality care and education to each child.

The Division of Early Care and Education recognizes the importance of of the work you do, and it wants to help produce the best caregivers and child care programs possible for West Virginia families. A credential indicates your desire to stay current on research and best-practices in order to provide individualized, quality care improving the lives of the children and their families. 

What is the WV Child Care Credential?

  • Voluntary, no cost to you

  • A two-part credential

    • General, complete first​

    • Specialization

  • Based on WV STARS registered trainings already required or currently being offered

  • Available to all child care providers in licensed or regulated sites

  • Initial bonus awarded upon completion

  • Renewal every 3 years

Young Businesswomen

The Division is pleased to announce West Virginia Child Care Credential Specializations!

Once you have attained your West Virginia Child Care Credential, providers can continue their journey with a Specialization:

  • Director’s Specialization – for child care program directors

  • Infant Toddler Specialization – for caregivers working with Infants and Toddlers

  • Preschool Specialization – for caregivers working with Preschoolers

  • Family Child Care Specialization – for Family Home Child Care providers

Once you achieve your specialization credential status, a bonus of $250.00 is available through submission of verification to your local Child Care Resource and Referral agency. For more information about this exciting new initiative, please contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral agency.
